Recycled PET polyester

basq is the only brand that uses plastic bottle waste as a raw material to design all our garments, many of which are collected on our coasts, thus preventing them from ending up in incineration or in the oceans.

What is PET?

PET is polyethylene terephthalate, a type of petroleum-derived plastic used to make plastic bottles. At basq we use these recycled PET bottles to obtain recycled PET polyester that maintains the same quality as virgin polyester; very resistant, quick drying and easy to wash without deforming.

The impact of plastic in the oceans.

91% of plastic is not and will not be recycled and ends up in landfills or in the oceans. We are turning the planet into a plastic dump.

In recent years, the consumption of plastic has multiplied by 20. From 15 million tons in 1964 to more than 300 today, and it is estimated that by 2025 it will double.

Every year eight million tons of plastic end up in the oceans. Imagine 15 shopping bags full of plastic on every meter of the planet’s coast… that’s 8 million tons of plastic.

If everything remains the same, by the year 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. It is estimated that a plastic bottle takes between 450 years and never to biodegrade.

Currently some 700 species of marine organisms are affected by this type of pollution.

Every year more than a million birds and more than 100,000 marine mammals die as a consequence of all the plastics that reach the sea.

Producing 1,000 grams of recycled polyester reduces CO2 emissions by 56% compared to 1,000 grams of virgin polyester.

50% of the energy used to recycle the polyester in our shoes, as well as to manufacture them, comes from solar energy.
